Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that poses significant health risks to humans and the environment. It is a naturally occurring element found in the Earth’s crust, but human activities have increased its concentration in the environment, leading to widespread exposure. Cadmium is a biproduct of various industrial processes, including mining, smelting, and battery manufacturing. Due to its presence in soil in some parts of the world it can be found in some crops and is thus present in cigarette smoke and some foods, particularly seafood, leafy vegetables and chocolate.
Exposure to cadmium can occur through inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact. Once absorbed into the body, cadmium accumulates in the kidneys, liver, and bones, where it can exert its toxic effects over time. Chronic cadmium exposure has been linked to a range of health problems, including kidney damage, bone loss, osteoporosis, respiratory problems, and cardiovascular disease. Cadmium is also a known carcinogen, increasing the risk of lung, prostate, and other cancers.
The toxicity of cadmium depends on the level and duration of exposure. Acute exposure to high levels of cadmium can cause severe symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and lung damage. In severe cases, acute cadmium poisoning can be fatal. Chronic exposure to lower levels of cadmium can also lead to health problems, particularly in sensitive populations such as children and pregnant women.
Patient Instructions:
Patients are advised to avoid fish and seafood consumption for 5-7 days before providing a blood sample for this test as these foods have been shown to temporarily increase circulating levels.
